The name Hurst comes from the Hurlbut family who settled in what is now Hurst in 1848. The post office was established here on March 15, 1851, and named for General Julius Hurlbut, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and been brevetted brigadier general by President Polk. In 1895, John C. Frisch opened an oil well near present day Hurst and began production which led to increases in oil prices which drove Frisch out of business in 1899. However, he reopened his well two years later and continued production until 1907 when he abandoned it due to a lack of profitability. In 1914 Jernigan Petroleum Company drilled a well under present day Hurst Boulevard and discovered natural gas but abandoned it due to high costs associated with developing such an early discovery Hurst had its first store opening by Wm Fenton on November 12th 1886. Fenton opened up what became one of Fort Worth's most famous stores - The Gilded Cage - located at 6th Street and Elm Street across from White Settlement Cemetery (now Forest Park). By 1915 there were over 100 businesses operating in town with support services including doctors, lawyers and bankers. A post office was organized on December 9th 1916 with Lula Murchison as the first mail carrier In 1924 local farmers started raising cotton; this led to increased automobile traffic that caused some congestion on Main Street A paper mill was built east of town between 1925 and 1927 by Wm Epps; it produced pulpwood for paper products until 1984 when it closed down . In 1928 Hwy 54 was completed connecting Fort Worth with Dallas via Arlington A new school was built west of town between 1929-1930 by Mrs Bechtel; it became known as Booker T Washington Elementary School after then Congressman John Fenton (D-Fort Worth) donated $10K towards its construction
