In the late 1800s and early 1900s, shooters in Hurst, Texas enjoyed some of the most unique and advanced hearing protection technology available. The Harvey rifle company first released hearing protectors in the early 1920s. The company was founded by Harvey Pollack, who invented the modern earplug. In 1927, Harvey Pollack and his son, Irving Pollack, started the American Workers Ear Protection Association to help workers protect their ears from noise pollution. In 1951, the American Worker's Ear Protection Act was passed which required employers to provide hearing protection for employees working with loud noises.
Hurst is a town in west Texas and the seat of Comanche County. The population was 10,813 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Comanche County by far. The first settlers to Hurst were pioneers who arrived during the Mexican–American War in 1846. They were driven out of their original land by Indians and found new land east of the Pecos River, which they named "Hurst". In 1854, surveyors discovered oil reserves near what is now Hurst and began development of the area as an oil town. The first wells were struck in 1858, but production didn't begin until 1863 when a second well was drilled. The oil industry has declined since its heyday, but Hurst remains one of Texas' most important settlements for agriculture. This comes about because of its location on two major ranches that produce crops such as cotton, corn, soybeans and wheat; both are important to local economy. Additionally, Hurston's proximity to Refinery Row in Dallas makes it an attractive location for businesses looking to establish themselves in this rapidly growing city center while also providing easy access to shipping and air travel

The Hurst, Texas community began in 1876 when the Chickasaw Nation ceded its land to the United States. The town was named for General George Hurlbut, who had served as a U.S. citizen and scout in Indian Wars in North Texas. In 1901, Dodge County was organized from portions of Jones County and Hurst became its county seat. The community experienced a period of prosperity during the 1920s with construction of Interstate 20 and oil production on the Shale Belt near Hurst Lakes. However, during the Great Depression, business declined andHurst experienced a decline in population that paralleled that of other small towns throughout Texas. By the early 1990s, however, development had resumed within the limits of Hurst City Limits and it has since seen continued growth as a bedroom community for Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area residents. Today, Hurst is an important center for agriculture with crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton and rice growing on over 1 million acres (500 km2). Manufacturing activity includes a number of small businesses including restaurant/cafés, home improvement stores and repair shops; several professional services firms; and one large manufacturing company that produces agricultural supplies such as seed products and feedlot equipment
