The first people to live in Hurst were French Canadians who came overland from Quebec in 1836. The name "Hurst" was given to them by Captain John Hurst of HMS Beagle, who was on his way to explore South America when he found the place named Harstad on July 16, 1836. From this place they began trading with Native Americans and settlers soon arrived: David Montgomery in 1837, James Fenton in 1839 (the father of rancher and politician George W. Fenton), Levi Morton in 1840-41 (from Illinois), and George Stephenson from Scotland in 1850. All these men had families and built houses around what is now Main Street which became known as "Hurst Place." In 1860s two brothers started a flour mill called "Wrights Mill" on the north side of town just west of US Highway 41 near present day Ardmore Road. This mill turned out flour for local retailers such as Armour & Co., Dormer's Hardware, Gillette Sporting Goods, J S Thomson & Sons cigars and other products until it went bankrupt during World War II due to lack of demand from war-time military personnel than replaced by postwar civilian consumers. Today there are only a few remnants of this mill including some foundations that can still be seen along Archer Road east of town off FM 528 about 3/4 mile northwest of HWY 71 exit 114B

Hurst, Texas is a small town in Tyler County, Texas. The population was 1,595 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1879 by Webber and Hickman. In 1902, it became part of the Dallas-Ft Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for Cyrus P. Hurst, a railroad official who donated land to the community in 1879. In 1902, it incorporated as a municipality with a population of 602 people. In 1960, the townsite of Ridgemont was annexed into Hurst; this made it one of only two townships within Tyler County that were not merged into other municipalities during the 1960s amalgamation process. In 1984, Hurst became home to the first high school graduate from Tyler County when Donnellan High School opened up in the town after being built on land donated by Mayor Tom Hogue and others in 1983. According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, Hurst has a total area of , all of it land.
