Hurst, Texas is a small town located in the Midwestern United States. The population was 2,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Hurst were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1838. They founded a church and chicken farm on what is now Main Street. By 1845, there were three homes and ninety-six people living in Hurst. The Methodists left in 1850, replaced by Baptists. A post office was opened in 1861, and by 1865 there were six residents living in Hurst. In 1881, an oil well was drilled near present-day Hurst and about seventy men worked for two years to extract oil from the well. In 1886, an area of land east of Main Street was reserved for a school district which would be known as "Hurst School District". The first school building was built on this property in 1889. Hurst is a town in Chambers County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It has been called "The Jewel of Chambers County" for many years. Hurst was founded in 1848 by John and Eliza Hurst as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Austin and Dallas. The first post office operated in 1852. The town name comes from Jasper Burden Hurst, who owned land near the present-day town site. In 1867, John Hartsock opened the first store in what is now Hurst. From 1870 to 1880, the community had two cotton ginners and two teachers before it became its own incorporated village with a school (the first charter issued to any municipality in Texas) on December 6th, 1881. The townsite was platted again in 1888 when Wm Pugh developed it into an agricultural center with tenant farmers receiving rations from local ranchers. By 1900 there were 10 stores/apartments and 300 residents; but during World War I Businessman JB Saunders closed his mill which destroyed most of the industry; business began to decline again until 1924 when Saunders reopened his mill with modern technology In 1930 Hurst's Post Office moved from downtown to their current location on Main Street In 1951 Dr Gail Wagner became mayor after being elected as a Democrat from Waco; she served until her death in 1984 In November 1998 Mayor Rick Meyers announced that he would not seek re-election due to ill health In 2002 through its Community Services District 5Hurston celebrated its centennial year A new high school was built adjacent to Barnes Middle School on State Highway 232 between Hurston and Kerrville In 2006 state Representative Don Huffaker represented Chambers County seat 2nd district including Hurston
