Hurst is a small town in Will County, Texas located about 30 miles northeast of Dallas and 60 miles southwest of Austin. The population was 9,361 at the 2010 census. Hurst is home to the University of Texas at Austin (UTA) and its main campus, as well as many smaller colleges and universities. It also has a small shopping center and several parks. The community was founded in 1879 by John Hurlbut and his family. The town name comes from their founder's father, a pioneer named Hiram Hurlbut who had been killed while hunting in what is now Hurst. By 1910, Hurst had become one of the largest towns in Will County by population. In 1914, it became a city when annexation by Dallas occurred; however, it reverted back to a rural community after only two years due to lack of support from local officials. The name change was due to strong anti-Japanese sentiment following World War II and because it could not be given to a community located on the border of Mexico and Texas due to historical reasons (Hurst sits on the southern edge of Mexican Territory). On October 1, 1948, Hurst became one of ninety towns in Texarkana County that were consolidated into the new Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area; however, it retains its own ZIP code (85736). According to the United States Census Bureau, Hurst has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,711 people residing in Hurst proper and 547 households outlying areas including 214 families or 36% of the population.
