There is a long and colorful history of Hurst, Texas, which can be traced back to the early 1900s. The town was founded on a ranch by brothers James and John Holmberg. The Holmbergs were ranchers who also had a store in the town. In 1907, the Holmberg brothers donated land in Downtown Hurst so that people could build their homes without having to worry about the weather. The originalhurtsville post office opened in 1909. The first mayor of Hurst was Wm. Haddock. From 1911-1920, Mayor Haddock served with distinction as Sheriff of Randall County. In 1915, Mayor Wm., J., and his wife established the first school in downtown Hurst which operated until 1949 when it became part of Houston PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT #4A In 1923, Harry Laughlin purchased land near US 290 and State Highway 183 for what would become known as Laughlin Ranchlands (later renamed Holmberg Ranch). This area would later include much of Downtown Hurst and much of present day Houston Laughlin began developing this land into what is now known as Holmberg Park. He created a golf course there and started selling homes to residents.
