The town was founded in 1887 by John Hurst and his wife Jane. John Hurst had emigrated from Scotland and started a farm in what is now Hurst. In 1892, he married Anna Cline and the two families moved to a new farm on White Sands Road east of town. In 1916, they built a white house west of the old farmhouse to serve as their home until their death in 1957. A post office called Hurst was established in 1888, but it was discontinued in 1903. The first postmaster was Amos Winton Jr.. In 1919-1920, the name of the town was changed from White Sands to Hurst after Jens Munchinghausen became mayor of Austin and sent letters to all residents urging them to adopt this change because it would be more equitable for everyone involved since many people were newly arrived or moving into this community for the first time Munchinghausen also served as director of public information for Austin city government during this time period In 1951-1953 respectively (the early years following World War II), Sam Merrill & Clyde King set up an agricultural research station here which eventually led to Kerrville’s designation as a small city Hurst has been mentioned frequently throughout history due its role within various events that have occurred within Hudspeth County such as: local elections held there; various wars fought or fought over near or across county lines; operations conducted by Ulysses S Grant’s Army during the Mexican-American War; flood control projects carried out by Hudspeth County during Hurricane Harvey; etc….
