Hurst, Texas is a small town in the Panhandle of Texas. It is located on the east side of the state, about 25 miles southwest of Amarillo. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Hurst was John A. Hurst in 1879. In 1902, Hurst became one of the towns served by Amarillo-Doña Ana County Roads 10 and 12. The post office at Hurst was opened on November 1, 1902, and remained open until it closed on July 14, 1966. The first school in Hurston was built in 1887 by Mrs. Jane Fenton during a time when there were no schools within range for students to attend. The firsthurston high school term began in fall 1918 and ended with summer 1919 after four years of operation; however due to World War I and its aftermath many students had to miss school to serve in the military or help support their families. Classes were later held at various homes before finally opening back up at the high school building which still stands today as part of downtown Hurston's core business district In 1941 Grady Junior College opened its doors here thanks to donations from local businesses and citizens who saw an opportunity for education that would benefit their community . With Grady JC now serving over 4,000 students from all across northeast Texas we continue to grow as a top notch institution while preserving our rural roots
