In 1896, the first store opened in town. By 1920, there were six stores and over 50 employees. The city’s gun industry ended when World War II began, but guns continued to be produced here until the early 1960s. In that time, Hurst became a major center for handgun manufacturing – responsible for producing more handguns than any other location in Texas. Firearms production stopped completely after 1966 because of restrictions placed on firearms by then-President Lyndon B Johnson. But gun security has not been abandoned entirely; since 1998, the City of Hurst has hosted an annual Gunshow open to the public where citizens can buy and sell firearms from local vendors. This tradition continues today – with an attendance figure of over 100 participants this year – making it one of the largestgun shows in North Texas! Hurst is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by John G. Hurst and his wife Anna. In 1899, the first school opened in the town and served grades one through twelve. The first church was built in 1901 and still stands today. In 1902, construction began on what would become the railroad station and depot in Hurst. This building still stands to this day as a museum open to the public. In 1911, John G. Hurst died and his wife Anna took over leadership of the community as its first female mayor. They also started a grocery store that continues to be run today by their descendants (the present-day Mayor's family). A post office called Hurst was established in 1907 and mail service continued until 1951; however, due to low population growth during that time period there wasn’t enough mail volume to justify an additional post office so it closed down permanently in 1951 Hurst is located at (36.* -99.*) miles east of downtown Austin on I-35W exit 311b/exit 288b/US 95 southbound between mileposts 362 & 363

Hurst is a town in Tyler County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,722 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from General John A. Hurst who fought in the Mexican-American War and Battle of Buena Vista. The first settlement in what is now Hurst was made by men who came overland from Missouri in 1836. They named their new community "Hurst" after General John A. Hurst who had fought during the Mexican-American War and Battle of Buena Vista near Fort Worth. By 1840, there were twenty settlers living in Hurst. In 1845, a group of men led by Prentice Gentry built the first cotton gin in Tyler County. In 1848–49, some residents created a Methodist church and school which still stands today on Main Street near downtown; this was also the first brick building located within present day Hurst limits. In 1851–52, a road called County Road No. 6 crossed county line into Tyler County from Henderson County; this made it possible for people to travel to Houston or Dallas without having to go throughTyler or Henderson Counties. By 1860, more than one hundred citizens lived in Hurst; many of these were farmers who cultivated corn, wheat and other crops along with raising hogs and cattle on their properties until 1870 when railroads arrived and began bringing jobs away from rural areas across America which corrected what had been an imbalance between input/output ratios within local economies caused by lack of communication among economic actors - specifically those engaged in agriculture (Langston 1984). In 1865–66, two miles west of town on FM 1098 stood a small Union army hospital providing care for Confederate wounded during the American Civil War while also serving as artillery ammunition storage depot connected to Fort Worth’s Union Arsenal Ammunition Depot east of town (Beaulieu 1990). That same year saw construction begin on what is now First Baptist Church on West Second Street – soon followed by completion of School District No 2’s original store building (now known as Kenedy Hall) on South Third Street several years later (1902). On Valentine's Day 1896 Hurricane Sarah damage inflicted extensive damage including partial destruction to both First Baptist Church & School District No 2 Store Building; however due to timely repairs both structures reopened prior to Christmas that year according as per plans submitted with Federal Aid Agency request for New Year's Resolutions 1897 (Foley 1903:2).
