Hurst, Texas is a small town in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex located about 25 miles southeast of downtown Dallas. The population was estimated to be around 100,000 in 2000 and has grown to over 150,000 today. The town is named after Samuel Hurst who founded the first store in what is now Hurst. The history of Hurst goes back to 1871 when Amos Cutts established a ranch on the east side of town. In 1907, J.P. Morgan purchased land in the center of town and began developing it into a commercial center with several stores, a hotel, and other buildings. By 1927, all of the businesses had been closed by recall from local officials because they were not meeting state requirements for fire insurance. However, Morgan reopened some businesses as part of his plans for redevelopment which included creating an amusement park on the northeast corner of First Street and Elm Drive adjacent to his railroad station. In 1932, ranchers John Witherspoon and Harry Hogg bought property along Elm Drive near First Street from Morgan for $2 million dollars which became known as Hogg Park. At this time, Hurst had just over 50 residents but by 1945 it hadgrown to more than 200 with many new homes being built on or around Hogg Park including Overland Park High School which opened in 1957 and remains one of the largest high schools in Texas today (the original school building was destroyed by a tornado that struck Hurst in 1965). During World War II much activity took place at Hogg Park due to its close proximity to Trinity Naval Air Station (now Wright-Patterson AFB) where bomber crews would refuel during their flights out nationwide. Also during World War II many jobs were created at nearby Arlington Mfg Company providing munitions for USAAF bombers; these jobs eventually led to Arlington's incorporation into Dallas County as Arlington County Municipal Employees Union Local No1 (ACMEU locals are still present within Dallas County government). Hurst also experienced some significant growth during the 1960s & 1970s when people started moving away from downtown Dallas for more suburban lifestyles closer to access to freeways (particularly I-10). Many new subdivisions were developed such as Gables Estates situated behind Old Hickory Hall Golf Course off Uptown Road while others such as Lakeside Village near Veterans Memorial Coliseum housing developments sprang up across streets such as McKinney Boulevard between Barker Road and White Oak Lane; these enclaves continued until well into the 21st century with few changes outside their specific neighborhoods despite numerous Amendments passed throughout each decade making them generally incompatible with contemporary suburbia lifestyle trends/patterns etc.). In 2002 Mayor Joe McNamara announced plans for redevelopment: instead of demolishing everything existing within 2 years he asked developers if they wanted “to keep most if not all”of their properties before starting demolition operations; however it quickly emerged that there was no WILL among developers either within or outside city limits TO KEEP THEIR PROPERTY! In fact only 1 developer WANTED TO KEEP THEIR PROPERTY! This sets off alarms bells amongst city planners who fear that unless comprehensive rezoning & planning occurs NOW THERE WILL BE NO WAY FOR THE CITY TO PREVENT EVEN MORE DISTURBANCE AND LOSS OF USE FROM THESE REZONING ACTION PLANNING PROCESSES AS MANY NEW OWNERS VOW TO BEGIN DESTROYING MUCH OF WHAT HAS EXISTED IN HARST OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS…….. This event marked an important turning point for the town as it became one of America's leading military cities. More businesses opened up throughout World War II as war demand increased; however, due to its location on ranches that produced cattle and horses (which were used to generate income), Hurst only experienced modest growth during this time period. However, things changed after 9/11 when many new jobs came available in New York City thanks to reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Katrina; which led to more people coming into townand creating some new business opportunities. AlthoughHurtsville continues to experience modest economic growth since then (due mainly to prohibition-era zoning laws that limit liquor sales), it has managed to keep pace with other major American metropolises such as New York City or Los Angeles over recent years - something that can be partially attributed to its strong community spirit."
Hurst was founded by James H. Hurst in 1881. The town developed around the local mill and sawmill on the banks of the Brazos River. In 1901, the town became a city and was renamed Fort Worth.
