Hurst, Texas is a small town located in the Midwestern United States. The population was 2,847 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in what is now Hurst were Native Americans who hunted game on the nearby mesa. The area was granted to John Hance by President James K. Polk in 1836 as part of land grant known as Tishomingo County. In 1860, Harry Hurst founded a log cabin near present-day McKinney and started trading goods with Indians and other settlers in that area. In 1872, he built an grist mill on Red River which became one of the largest flour mills in Texas. During World War II, many local men served in the military including George Foley who commanded Company C (4th Infantry) at Camp Bowie and General Wade Hampton who commanded Third Corps at Fort Sam Houston during OperationDustyRose from 1942-1945. After the war ended, much of what had been developed along Red River was abandoned due to overpopulation and lack of available water resources; however, some properties were developed such as a shopping mall that opened in 1980 called Plaza East Mall which closed after two years due to poor management and financial difficulties for its developers

Hurst was founded in 1872 by Daniel Hurst and his wife, Lucy. The town became a center for cotton production in the early 1800s, thanks to its location between Loop 3 and 4 Texas highways. In 1907, the named street in downtown Hurst was renamed after John W. Hirst, president of Texaco (now Chevron). In 1915, when World War I began, Hurst residents raised money to buy munitions from Philadelphia and send them to their fellow Texans. After the war ended, they decided to stay and rebuild what had been destroyed. They did this by creating a cooperative economy which relied on agriculture, manufacturing and service sectors. Today, Hurst is home to several businesses including JCPenney Department Store; KFC; Methodist Health Services; and Wells Fargo Bank.
Hurst was founded in 1881 by a group of gold prospectors. The town grew quickly, and in 1903 it incorporated as a municipality. By 1907, Hurst had over 1,000 residents. In 1916, the city built its first public library. In 1930, the city annexed the neighboring towns of Rocksville and Prairie View.
