In 1865, the town of Hurst, Texas was established on the banks of the bluffs overlooking the Trinity River. The town began as a small ranching community and soon became an important center for gunsmithing in the region. The first guns to be made in Hurst were rifles and handguns. In 1868, John Mears founded a company called The Arsenal Arms Company which manufactured rifles and pistols under license from various military manufacturers. In 1875, Isaac Parker founded a company called The Armory Company which produced shotguns and revolvers. In 1887, Augustus O'Neill bought out The Armory Company and changed its name to Colt Firearms Corporation. In 1903, Colt Firearms Corporation merged with Brown & Wesson Corporation to form Winchester Ammunition Corporation. In 1912, Winchester Ammunition Corporation merged with Remington Arms Corp to form Remington-Winchester firearms corporation. In 1933, Winchester Firearms corporation merged with Holland & Knight munitions empire to become American Gun Manufacturing Incorporated (AGM). AGM continued manufacturing firearms until it was acquired by United States Arms Corp in 1985

The first settler in Hurst was James H. Griggs who arrived on July 24, 1853. He named his property "Hurst" after his home state of Michigan where he had been born and raised. Griggs made a farm there for about 25 years before selling it to John Matson in 1875. Matson also named his property "Hurst". In 1903, Wm H. Worrell bought land from J.C. Dyer near present-day Hurst and built a mile-long millrace on which he ran a sawmill until 1905 when he sold it to Ainsworth Manufacturing Company of Dallas, Texas for $200,000 (). In 1915, Harry Ladd purchased from Worrell the millrace and adjacent properties which became known as Ladd's Prairie Ranch (). Ladd developed the area into an Exposition Park that included an agricultural fair each year (the first such event in Texas) until 1923 when it was turned over to the city of Houston by then Mayor Moody Price (). In 1954, Houston annexed most of Waller County including Hurst (), so all vestiges of Ladd's Prairie Ranch were lost forever except for one small parcel still within City LimitsHouston! The only remnant remaining today is a portion of State Highway 10 that runs through downtown Hurst directly across from Memorial Stadium/Texas Stadium (home field for Rice University football games). Ladd's Prairie Ranch now provides entrance gates to Memorial Stadium/Texas Stadium as well as lodging for visiting athletes during college football season! A map illustrating location and boundaries of Waller County dated 1917 shows that James Hurds land lay east side lot line extending northerly 12 rods north thereof 3 rods west thereof 2 rods south thereof bounded by current streets running easterly 9 miles longitude westward thence due south by Spanish Fork Creek commencing at its mouth on Galveston Bay being bounded northerly by said creek 6 rods thence due west 8 rods
