When the first settlers arrived in Hurst, Texas in 1867, they were greeted with much enthusiasm. The area was rich in natural resources and a thriving agricultural economy. The towns of Hurst and Beaumont had already been established when the new arrivals arrived, and soon there were several gunsmiths, traders, and farmers providing arms for the local militias. The early guns used cannons that were made from smoothbore barrels that could be fired only with powder shot taken from longboats moored at various points along the Trinity River. The round ball was too large to be fired by hand, so a man had to use a muzzleloader to discharge it. By 1800, however, rifles had become available that could fire small balls as well as larger rounds. This change not only helped increase firepower but also made it easier for soldiers to control their battlefields. In 1881, John Fenton built what is now known as Fenton’s Gun Shop on Main Street in Hurst. At this point firearms began being manufactured specifically for hunting deer and other game species rather than just being used for military purposes. This shift happened because rifle manufacturers became more interested in making guns that could be used both commercially and militarily. Thanks to John Fenton’s innovations, handguns also began becoming more prevalent across America during this time period- something that would continue into the 20th century. The Hurst Rifle Company was founded in 1892. The company was purchased by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1899. In 1902, the rifle company became known as the Winchester-Hurst Rifle Corporation. The company made rifles and shotguns under their own name and also produced ammunition for other brands. In 1906, the company merged with Browning Rifle Company to form Winchester-Browning Firearms Corporation. The company produced firearms under both its own name and Browning brand until 1946 when it merged with Colt Defense Corporation to become Colt-Winchester Firearms Corporation.
Hurst, Texas is a town in Dawson County, in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 6,288 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex and is included in the Dallas-Houston–Ft. Worth, TX metropolitan area. The first known settler in Hurst was James Gentry in 1845. The first post office was established in 1846, and the first store was opened in 1850. The town name derives from General David Hurlbut's 1862 victory over Mexican forces at Palo Alto Hill outside of Houston on November 11th, 1862 during the American Civil War. In 1868, Jules Pemberton founded a cattle ranch west of Hurst that became one of the largest ranches in Texas history when it merged with White Sands Ranch to form United States Land and Cattle Company Ltd.; this company would be renamed as Pemberton land Co., Ltd., later Harry Laughlin & Sons Incorporated (HLS). In 1902, Averill Harriman purchased Pemberton land east of Hurst from Jules Pemberton for $5 million; he would rename it Harriman Ranch Corporation (HRCo.). In 1916 USL&C acquired an additional parcel adjoining HRCo.'s east boundary for $4 million; this became what later became Enterprise Oil Refining Company #2 (EORC2). In 1957 HRCo.'s eastern boundary was moved further westward along I-35W to crossed under FM 1536 just north of present day Slaughter Road; this tract formedHarriman Subdivision which also includes much of present day Slaughter Valley and parts of Garland County as well as portions now within Tomball County including Flower Mound/Tomball Lake/Tomball Mills and Quarry City/ Flower Mound Airport/. EORC#1 acquired another piece adjacent to FM 1536 forming EORC#2 which owns much current surface property across FM 1536 between Ike Davis Rd./US 287N & US 287W - including much current city limits such as Flower Mound/Tomball Lake etc.. Today most businesses located along I-635 such as ExxonMobil Corp.(XOM), Phillips 66(PHX), Marathon Petroleum Co.(MRO) are based on or nearHarriman Rd./I-635 whereas other businesses such as AT&T Mobility Services(TMT) have been spawned off various roadsides or intersections nearby including Saginaw Loop / Interstate 10 West(I-10W)/ Beltway 8 East(I-8E) although some new business ventures have recently cropped up such as Jack Inthe Box ® . In 1830, settlers began to arrive in what is now Hurst and established a businesses including a mill, gristmill, and post office. In 1836, the first school was built in what is now Hurst. The town became a county seat in 1857 and two years later it had a courthouse. In 1870, a railroad was started through Humble and in 1872 it connected with Dallas via Houston. By 1900, there were over 50 businesses in thetown of Humble with over 1,000 residents.
