Hurst, Texas was one of the original towns in the Trans-Pecos country. It was named for General James Hurst, a Confederate officer who served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The town developed around a cotton gin and mill complex that operated from 1845 to 1865. In 1907, Hurst became an important railroad junction and grew rapidly as a result. By 1930, it had approximately sixty thousand residents. After World War II, Hurst experienced significant growth as a suburb of Austin.
Hurst, Texas is located in the south central United States. The population was 8,852 at the 2010 census. It is a small town that has been around since 1885. The town was originally named for General John A. Hurst, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Texas. The name of the town comes from its location on Horseback Bend Creek which flows into Red River Valley in west Texas. The first permanent settler in what would become Hurst was James Hance who arrived in 1885 and built a log cabin on the east side of Horseback Bend Creek. In 1889, Hance's daughter Sarah married James Neely who had also come to ranchland near present day Hurst about that time. Neely's brother Danforth established an agricultural business around 1900 which helped build up the community as a center for cattle and agriculture production until World War II when industry took over and most of Hurst's residents left for work on farms overseas or elsewhere in the United States during wartime production shortages. Hurst experienced significant growth following World War II with newcomers coming to work in post-war reconstruction efforts including many Koreans who worked on nearby Beaumont Air Force Base during World War II before returning home to help rebuild their homes and communities back home; African Americans working at local stores and restaurants; Hispanic immigrants moving into positions such as landscapers and service workers during postwar boom periods;and finally new retirees drawn by attractive retiree housing developments available near downtown along with good schools (including one high school district) making it an increasingly popular retirement destination among Texans looking for rural living opportunities outside of Houston/DallasTX metropolitan areas where lifestyles are more expensive and less diverse than those found in smaller towns like Hurst where access to quality education is limited but affordable properties abound making it an attractive place to live even if one cannot commute to work or other places within city limits). Hurst was founded in 1879 as a small town on the banks of the Brazos River. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, and by 1907 it had become one of the largest cotton towns in Texas. In 1938, Hurst became an incorporated city and remains that way today. Hurst is located about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Austin and 10 miles (16 km) south of Houston. The town has a population of over 100,000 people and covers an area of just under square miles (2 km²). It is probable that Hurst was named for General John A. Hurd, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as Governor of Texas from 1861 to 1865. In 1879, Dr. Jock McDowell established a small hospital in Hurst which he called the McDowell County Hospital. This hospital served as the primary care center for local farmers and their families until 1915 when it was replaced by the first modern hospital building which still stands today at 411 S Main Street. The first school in Hurston opened in 1881 with ten students inside a small room on Elm Street. The school continued to operate until 1914 when it was replaced by a larger structure on First Avenue which still stands today. In 1907, Hurst became one of the first cities in Texas to adopt electric streetlights! These lights were installed along First Avenue between State Highway 9 and Interstate 45 Business before being extended eastward to US 247 Business near Interstate 35W. It wasn't until 1938 thatHurston became an incorporated city! When this happened, Mayor James Dickey decided that incorporation would make life easier for his citizens; incorporation allowed for more government services such as water supplies, trash disposal, fire protection etc., which helped spur economic development within the city limits. Today, you can find many businesses located within or adjacent to downtown Hurston while also finding several short-term rentals properties available close to both parks & shopping areas like Old Courthouse Square & Lamar University Campus
