The Hurst-Furst area was first populated by the Wichita people. In 1827, the Texas Rangers found a group of Wichita Indians living in what is now Hurst. The Rangers offered to help them find their way home, and they moved into what is now the town of Fort Worth. In 1829, General Sam Houston founded anvik Ranch in what is now Hurst. The ranch was used as a military staging ground for cattle drives from Fort Worth to San Antonio. The ranch also produced crops and livestock for local farmers. In 1886, John Witherspoon opened the first grocery store in Fort Worth. He named it after his father, John Witherspoon Sr., who had owned land in Fort Worth since before it became a city.
