In 1837 local resident George Washington Miller founded an Academy which became one of three colleges open to white students in Baylor University when it was founded in 1871 In 1840 Alexander Houston established a cotton plantation just east of what would become Huntsville along Buffalo Bayou Houston purchased about 635 acres (240 ha) from James Bowie Layne for $4 per acre ($/ha), making him one of the largest landowners in southeast Texas before he died in office in 1846 In 1850 Thomas Kirby began construction on what would become First Baptist Church which opened its doors on December 12th, 1850 In 1861 Isaac Newton Phelps organized a wagon train leaving Fayetteville Arkansas bound for Brazoria County but failed to make it through due to Confederate cavalry blockading their route near Prairie View A&M College Some 1,500 black Texans crossed into Mexican territory during this time period seeking refuge from slave raiding operations led by Confederate Captains Stephens and Houston

Huntsville, Texas is a town located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 95,772 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Huntsville County. It is also the county seat of Huntsville County. The town began as a small settlement on the east side of what is now Huntsville, just north of present-day Alabama State Line. In 1836, John A. Dunlap founded what would become Huntsville with his family and others from Decatur County, Illinois; their original land grant was two square miles (5 km²). In 1861–1862 Confederate troops burned down many buildings in downtown Huntsville during Battle of Gaines Mill; most notably clinic building #1 which still stands today. By 1865 local businessman John Millington had built a sawmill on White Oak Creek adjacent to what is now WhiteOak Village shopping mall; Hunt's Mills became one of America's largest cotton mills during this time period along with other businesses such as banks and flour mills across Alabama and Mississippi River valleys due to its production capabilities.. Millington sold his mill in 1889 to Pabst Brewing Company owner Lucius Wurlitzer who renamed it Pabst Brewery after his friend Abraham Pabsts purchase in 1886 from German brewer Friedrich Pabsts parent company Gildebrandtische Brauerei AG..
