Huntsville is a city in and the county seat of Marshall County, Texas, United States. The population was 12,895 at the 2010 census. Huntsville is one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas. The first whites settlement in what is now Marshall County was made by Father José de Urquiza y Gómez on November 1, 1836 while he was serving as pastor of San Antonio de Bexar Mission Station. A small community developed around this site but it soon declined because no water could be found to support crops and people lost interest in moving to the area after discovering another more fertile tract of land about 20 miles (32 km) away east at Lubbock. On February 17, 1876, John Nance Garner purchased 640 acres (245 ha) southeast of present-day Huntsville from James Fenton for $5 per acre ($=). The location would becomeGarner's primary business center due to its easy access to transportation and resources such as coal mining and oil exploration nearby. In 1882/1883 businessman Jno.[John] Wesley Hardin donated land north of town along FM 1960 for a new courthouse which would serve as a model for future U.S.-owned towns throughout Southeast Texasght before being replaced by the current structure in 1923 with an addition that included office space then divided into three levels which still form part of the mall today known as "The Garneredome". In 1901 Annexation became possible when two adjacent Farmers' Markets were combined into one market – known then simply as "The Market" or simply "Huntsville." By 1907 there were over 40 businesses located downtown including several banks; four grocery stores including Smith's Grocery & Meat Market; Five Mile Barbecue restaurant; Post Office; Baptist Church - First Baptist Church (); Hunt Brothers Cigar Store (later White Sulky Cigars); Ponderosaethnic Clothing store - also later White Sulky Cigars; Cyrus Hogue Boot & Shoes store - later Citizens Business Bank ; Huntsville Telephone Company Building ; First National Bank building ; Coca Cola Bottling Plant on Main Street . At that time Mayor Wm[Franklin] Dolph pulled out all stops to bring about annexation so that “the best interests”of both City Council members Frank Sprague (from East Houston)and Arthur Sarnoff (from North Richland Hills)would be considered when making decisions affecting property lines within ourCity Limits’ [sic]. annexing new territory brought much excitement not only because citizens had dreams of incorporationbut also because they saw their City grow from itsOriginal Size downsized following World War I [1914-1918]." In 1912 an ordinance proposing annexation passed 6-2 with Sprague abstaining due to his opposition to race mixing within elected bodies at the time among other things while Sarnoff cast his vote for inclusion based on what he perceived as potential benefits for himself should Huntsvillians become a part of Dallas County through annexation plans currently under consideration by county commissioners chaired by Republican commissioner Tom Barrett who has since retired from public service However Sprague re-approached council chambers without bantering after media reports surfaced stating Huntingtonites were angry about proposed changes regarding voting rights status quo withinDallas County thereby prompting Sprague's intervention leading eventually to passage thereof with sprague seconded only by fellow Houstonian Burton Kline . With justover 2 years remaining on annexation deadline setters originally expected completion date September 15th 1912 however revised date October 1st 1913 arrived via order from Dolph granting 3 day extension ". As stated earlier annexed territory became home to some 60 businesses chartered before 1915 including 11 banks10 grocery stores6 post offices3 schools1 hospital1 movie theater1 pool hall1 barber shop1 auto garage
