In 1901, USGS surveyor George Hogg surveyed lands downriver from Mount Pleasant including what would become Huntsville proper; he named it after his friend Samuel Cripps Hutchinson (1822-1902), director of USGS during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. In 1907(), J. Willis Caldwell organized what became known as "The First Men's Club" which lobbied hard for statehood for Arkansas while living in Clarksburg; meeting at Caldwell's old home Every day from 7 am until 10 pm provided an opportunity for men 25 years or older who could not otherwise attend school or work outside their homes to learn about politics and participate in debates with likeminded individuals from across Arkansas Territory including future Governors James Fenton Westmoreland (1884-1900)and Orval Faubus (1886-1938). On November 3d 1907 Statehood was granted by Governor Faubus however only 8 members Of The original 27 showed up To receive their state flag which flew over The Capitol Building That night!
