Additionally, many smaller businesses were situated throughout downtown area such as Girdler’s department store (1925) which still stands today and Beaumont’s restaurant (1920). Thanks to its location near two major metropolitan areas - Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Fort Worth -Huntsville quickly became known as "The Hub" for southeastern Texas employers looking for a job market that offered good benefits and plenty of career opportunities. In recent decades, though not without some controversy or tumult - particularly centered around Mayor Annise Parker's election victory over then-Councilman Rick Perry -the city has seen steady economic growth with nearly 2 million square feet (+/- $10 million) being added to its skyline since 2006 alone!
