Born in Huntsville, Texas on October 15, 1881, outlaw Jesse James was the son of a family of sharecroppers. He became known as the "King of the Cowboys" during his time in Texas and West Virginia. In 1916, he and his gang led an unsuccessful robbery attempt at the Comanche County courthouse in Wichita Falls. A year later, he was caught by U.S. Marshals while robbing a railroad depot in Waco, Texas. After being sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor on sharecropper's land outside Huntsville, James emigrated to Mexico City in 1933 and started a criminal career that spanned more than fifty years. On January 20, 1915, two days after his father's death from natural causes at the age of seventy-six years old, Jesse James married Evalyn Hester—the daughter of wealthy merchants from Decatur County, Georgia—in ceremonies conducted by Methodist minister George Fenton Jr. The couple had three children: Jamie (1921–2008), Jesse (1925–2005), and Anna (b 1921). They lived initially in Dallas but soon moved to Tyler where they founded their own home-building business. After making several failed attempts to escape prison while serving time for other crimes including forcible rape and murder of a sheriff's deputy in Oklahoma City,[1] James decided to makeiah himself into an all-around lawman when he was released from prison on December 12, 1934.[2] On May 6 that year he made history when he shot and killed John Dillinger inside the Mexicali Hotel near Denver Colorado Springs after Dillinger had robbed four banks across Mexican States over a period of several months.[3] In 1939 James returned to West Texas where he resumed operations as an outlaw until finally being arrested by U S Marshal Jerry Moran on February 17th of that year at White Sands Missile Range outside Albuquerque New Mexico following an eightmonth string of raids against high-ranking politicians and businessmen connected with Operation Crossroads which was designed to investigate possible Communist infiltration into American society through what were called "spy activities".[4][5][6][7][8] Upon his arrest, it was determined thatJesse James possessed both money and weapons caches amounting to $350 million[9][10], most notably within Interstate 30 between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport[11]and Austin Round Rock International Airport within 120 mileswest
