Humble is a small town in Texas that was founded by George Humble on the banks of the Brazos River in 1837. The town grew around Humble Creek, which crossed the town and formed part of its boundary. In 1881, Humble incorporated as a city. Over time, Humble has become an important center for business and culture in southwestern Texas. The city also hosts several annual events, such as the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which are popular with locals and visitors alike. George Humble was born in 1802 in Virginia to Revolutionary War veteran John Humble and his wife Susannah (née McDonnell). After serving in the Mexican-American War under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, George moved to what is now named Harris County with his family in 1827. He began working as a farmhand before starting his own grocery store at age 25. In 1830, he married Eliza Beardmore; they had six children together. The Beardsmores sold their grocery store and started driving stagecoaches to San Antonio until their death in 1865. From then on, George's son Harry ran the store until it went out of business in 1898. By 1840, George had built a house near present-day downtown Humble on land that he donated to the townspeople for use as a public square. In 1881, after becoming an incorporated city with a population of about 150 people*, Humble voters approved incorporation into what is now called Midland County *. After being annexed by Midland County*, Humble became home to many large businesses including IBM* (now known as Intel) *and Pabst Brewing*. By 2006*, when Midland County merged with Dawson City *to form Wichita Falls – which included much of today's downtown – only IBM remained.* In recent years*, however, many smaller businesses have closed or been bought out by larger ones* (*CVS Health acquired local pharmacy chain CVS Pharmacy last year). Despite this decline (*CVS Health announced plans earlier this year to close 180 stores across America over the next five years), some residents continue to make significant contributions to local society through their work at various civic organizations(*Progressive Democrats organized an event against proposed merger last week). It’s no wonder then that Mayor Donny Moody callsHumble “the heartbeat of Midland County”! * Although annexation by Wichita Falls led to declines in economic activity withinHumbleshipping district(*Pabst Brewing shuttered its plant here last year), its residents still maintain strong ties with their former hometown*. On Memorial Day weekend each year - coinciding with National Firefighters Day - citizens from all overMidlandCounty gather at DowntownHumbleside assemble flags flown half-staffrecognizing those who have lost their lives fighting firefights or brigades stationed elsewhere.* Many residents also donate funds towards Central Texas Regional Airport projects(*TheCityofHouston partnered up with Pilgrim Airlines last year to provide hangar space for several small airports withinWichitaFalls). Although major construction efforts are ongoing (+new restaurants/stores opening every few months), most Main Street attractions remain largely unchanged from when they were first opened 80+ years ago* (*Theater District remains open two days per week during regular business hours*)!
Humble, Texas was founded on November 2, 1836 by James Humble and his wife Rebecca. The town grew rapidly due to its location in the fertile East Texas agricultural region and its easy access to both railroads and water supplies. By 1840, Humble had a population of over 200 people. In 1845, the town became the county seat of Limestone County when it was organized from portions of Brazoria and Montague counties. The townsite remained the county seat until 1872 when Fort Bend County was established and the county seat moved to Galveston.
