The history of Humble stretches back to 1836 when General Sam Houston founded what would become Hudspeth County as an open range rancho on the edge of present day Humble. Today’s downtown area was settled in 1881 when J.W. Ladd opened his cattle drive from Fort Worth into Hudspeth County, leading to the founding of Ladd City Limits (now Downtown Humble). In 1915, George Wickersham purchased 3 square miles (7 km2) east of downtown and annexed it to Hudspeth County; this made Humble one of the first counties in Texas to be created through annexation.[2] In 1966, Humble became an incorporated municipality with its own government and elected mayor and council members. The town government continued until 1994 when it merged with neighboring Round Rock into one municipality under then-mayor Donny Huffman’s leadership. Since then, Humble has had a three-member council form with mayoral term limits that gives residents more power over local decisions than in other municipalities in Texas. On January 1st 2020, Mayor Donny Huffman announced he would not seek reelection due to health concerns[3]. On February 5th 2020 Representative Garnet Coleman announced he would run for Mayor against Mayor Huffman[4]. Coleman easily won election by a wide margin becoming only the second person ever to serve two terms as Mayor without running for re-election[5], and setting an example for future mayors who may want to run for office multiple times without seeking additional terms
