Humble is a city in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 13,898 at the 2010 census. Humble is located on the east bank of the Brazos River and is included in the Austin–Midtown area. It lies near Interstate 10 and State Highway 87. The land that now makes up Humble was first settled by people who were Native American. In 1836, Colonel John Biscoe purchased of land from the Lipan Apache Tribe for $1 per acre. He named his new settlement "Houston", after General Houston's headquarters in Texas City, which he had established on what is now I-10 east of downtown Austin. In 1839, Biscoe sold another piece of land to Sam Rayburn for $5 per acre; this became known as "Houston Heights". The town's first school was built in 1840 on donated property by John Pemberton. In 1845, Mayor James Darnell appropriated money to build a county courthouse and jail; construction began in March 1846 and finished three months later. That same year saw the opening of Houston's first post office (named Prairie View A&M University). In 1850, Mayor James Darnell designated Houston Heights as the site where he would erect his monumental statue of Liberty Enlighten'd (later renamed George Washington). The cornerstone for the statue was laid on November 5th by Commodore Perry during a visit to Houston that also included an inspection of USS Perry (1850) and USS Republic (1851), both then under construction at nearby Baytown Shipbuilding & Drydock Company shipyard. On July 8th 1870 Humble incorporation was granted with a population of only 2 inhabitants – Father Jules Ferry! By 1890 there were over 50 businesses and 100 citizens living within blocks radius around downtown! It wasn't until 1915 when oil discoveries were made along I-10 west of town that things really started to change for Humble – industry quickly supplanted agriculture as our primary source for income! With companies such as Shell Oil CompanyTexaco Refining Company among them, we have seen numerous growth spurts throughout our history including annexations from other municipalities resulting in today’s city limits! Today’s skyline can be credited largely to two factors: First off recent annexation into neighboring Austin; second off development initiated by local developersover time culminating with annexation last year following election results which saw former City Manager Vernon Weems elected mayoralty himself!

When the first white settlers arrived in Humble, Texas in 1836, they were met with hostility and resistance. The area was known for its harsh weather and inhospitable soil, so the settlers had to be hard-working and creative to survive. Many of the early pioneers who came to Humble were farmers or mechanics. They started small businesses and grew them into successful enterprises over time. In addition, they also built homes and erected fences around their land to protect it from raiders and other predators. The town that today stands in the heart of Humble was founded on November 17, 1881 by a group of men led by Wm. Fenton. It was named after Judge James Houston (1788-1854), a colorful figure in American history who served as a justice of the peace, county clerk, probate judge, delegate to Congress from Texas, secretary of state under Polk administration, mayor of Austin during Reconstruction period - all before becoming one of America's most influential jurists. Houston's donation of 100 acres (40 hectares) for development is still considered one of the biggest gifts ever given in Texas history. The town quickly became an important stop on local trade routes and attracted new residents interested in finding opportunities beyond agriculture or ranching. By 1907, when it had a population of 2200 people living within a radius of 10 miles (16 km), Humble had become an important center for business and culture in eastern Galveston County. A number of prominent Texans – including former President James Kossuth – made their homes here while performing various civic duties or attending fashionable events catered to Galveston society at Ridgemont mansion near downtown Humble until its demolition in 1965. Although many aspects about nineteenth century life have been replaced by modern day technology - such as streetlights - some old buildings remain standing testament to community spirit and entrepreneurship: The first post office opened at Humble on October 1st 1884; two years later J&H Cotton gin & drug store opened; ranchero bar called "El Ranchito" served breakfast until 1959; several churches still serve congregations today: First Baptist Church (1892), Methodist Episcopal Church (1902), Presbyterian Church (1912) - all now part of nearby Clear Lake City ; Second Baptist Church (1906), Holy Cross Catholic Parish evangelist church building/parish hall 1915 built without cost outlay by Revd Father Lorenzo Mataixeira which is now used as parish school; Third Baptist Church burned down but materials were salvaged & rebuilt 1951-52 with new facade Credit union complex built 1955-60 next door which houses several convenience stores currently being operated by Trinity Financial Corporation
