On February 14th of that year, John Gentry opened a store in what is now known as Gentry's Store #1 (now occupied by Walmart). By 1860 there were nineteen stores in town; three churches also helped contribute to its growth. In 1865 an addition to Gentry's Store #1 was made which served as the first schoolhouse in Humble; today this building still stands cornering Main Street between First Avenue and US 36/HS 146. In 1916, the Wilson brothers sold their interest in Cloudcroft Village to Pemberton, who renamed it Humble after he found an old plat for "Humility" on a map in 1851 while hunting near present-day Arlington Heights. The first post office operated at "Humble Spring" from 1887 to 1893; it was moved to its present location on Railroad Avenue in 1912. In 1917, the town's first school opened; it continued operation until 1968 when it became a community college campus with its own post office and school district (). In 1925, Humble received a water connection from Dallas County through the Dallas Water Supply Company; this made it possible for residents to start using public baths and laundry facilities outside of town proper ().
