During World War II many people left their homes to serve in the military due to rationing; however, many residents returned after hostilities ended. Growth resumed following World War II when new businesses were opened up by veterans and others who had returned to live in Humble or nearby towns such as Springdale and Fort Worth. By 1960 there were over 1,000 businesses operating in Humble with a population of 10,500 people. In 2000 annexation by Arlington Heights made Humboldt County within city limits; however growth continued elsewhere within city boundaries resulting in the current population size of 17%, which includes all unincorporated areas east of I-30 between Belt Line Road and FM 6206/US 71 (the University District). The attractive geographic location provides ample opportunity for businesses seeking access to Interstate 30/Loop 610 interchange without having to leave City Limits; this has resulted in increased traffic congestion on I-30 throughout much of downtown including portions near State Capitol Complex along Loop 610/I-30 frontage roads
