Humble is a small town in Texas, located about 20 miles east of Austin. It was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1836, and became known as the "ighambly" of the area because many of its residents were Humble Indians. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, thanks to its location on the railroad and its connections to nearby Austin. In 1907, Humble incorporated as a city, and has continued to grow since then. Today, it anchors a rural boomtown with a population of around 100,000 people. The earliest evidence that Humble was inhabited is from Paleo-Indian times. The local Yelkota tribe may have hunted game near present-day Humble in Search for Water Cave bones dating back to 10,000 years ago. A more likely explanation for this site is that it was used as an early village by the Yelkota tribe before being abandoned due to water availability or other reasons. In 1836, Mormon pioneer parties led by Brigham Young arrived at what would become Humble after traveling through much of Texas looking for land to establish his empire. One reason why wagon trains traveled so far west was because there had been no major rivers or streams in central Texas until recently; prior to European settlement, most travelers relied on horseback or pack train rides over difficult terrain for supplies and transportation. The Mormons first pitched their tents near what is now downtown Humble on November 11th1836 while waiting for assistance from General David Ewell's forces besieging Fort Worth.(1) soon afterward they moved into permanent homes built on a hill overlooking downtown.(2) In 1837 Governor Fannin ordered all Indian towns must give up their weapons or be destroyed.(3) This order effectively shut down most Indian life outside of missionary convert groups such as the LDS Church which conducted proselytizing activities among Native Americans living within traditional tribal boundaries). Although some Indians did fight against white settlers during this time period (e.g., John Bennett), overall resistance appears not have been significant enough to hinder white development.(4) Afternoon sun came out strong today so I finally got some good pictures last night #humbletx A post shared by rick (@rickcarterphotography) on Jun 5, 2017 at 8:10pm PDT A few months later on December 6th1837 Brigham Young issued another order prohibiting any further hostilities between whites and Indians:(5) This order effectively ended any open warfare between colonists and native peoples in central Texas.(6) Over time however violence did occur between natives and white settlers along these same borders due largely to misunderstandings caused by religious conversionsamongst both groups(7). In 1840 one settler killed three natives when he mistakenly believed they were raiding his property(8). By 1850 only five buildings remained standing in downtown Huble:(9). Despite this declineHumpy continued growing rapidly thanks largely to new transportation opportunities afforded by railroads which linked central TX with neighboring cities like Austin(10). By 1860 there were over seventy businesses operating in downtown(11). During this time period many jobs were available within Central TX through various organizations such as cattle drives (eases commerce during off season), oil wells (leased lots for housing throughout area), cotton ginning ( production of chaff/flour from bolls created when Cottonseed flowers are pollinated), manufacturing (manufacturing goods such as saddles/ bridles etc.), farming (livestock husbandry including raising crops such as corn/beans etc.)and banking sector which included several banks among others.(12)(13) Many services provided outside of regular business hours were carried out either specifically contracted out or outsourced through various companies located within town limits including barber shops catered towards farmers who needed haircuts but could not afford a salon themselves; laundry services providers took care of everything from laundering clothes made from raw cotton materials all the way up until ironing them; numerous restaurants served Frontier cuisine such as wild rice dishes often cooked over an open fire; prostitutes provided sexual services primarily within walking distance of businesses; blacksmiths produced items such as horseshoes and nails without havingto go through regular channels like artisans found elsewhere;; There also existed numerous small businesses providing essential everyday errands like performing grocery shoppingProvidence bakery started baking donuts almost 50 years ago! pic.twitter.com/BvNfKjnY3T— Rick Carter (@rickcarterphotography) January 16, 2018
