Houston has a long and varied history with guns. From the time handguns were first developed in Houston, handguns have been an important part of the city's culture. Gun manufacturers such as Colt Firearms and Browning Arms have come to Houston from all over the United States to create firearms here. The history of handguns in Houston begins with private militia pistols called "Betsy" pistols. These pistols were designed by armsmiths Charles Goodyear and Samuel Colt, who had worked on revolvers for the U.S. Army during the American Civil War. The Betsy pistol was actually a variation of the 1851 French revolver, which had been imported into America just prior to that war (the Betsy was also chambered for a .36 caliber ball). After Texas independence from Mexico in 1845, Texans began receiving rifles from U.S. forces in order to arm themselves against Mexican aggression (the Texas Revolution). One such rifle was the Springfield Rifle, which was used by General Sam Houston and his volunteers during the Texan Campaign of 1846-48 (Houston helped lead this campaign). In 1847, Henry Claymore purchased rights to produce an improved version of the French revolver known as the Claymore.[1] This new revolver featured a revolving cylinder that allowed it to fire multiple rounds per minute instead of one per round like earlier revolvers did (Claymore intended this weapon mainly for use by Rangers and other mounted units). The Smith & Wesson Company produced these new weapons under license from Claymore until 1861 when he died suddenly (he had also purchased exclusive rights to produce what became known as "Old Model" Smith & Wesson firearms).[2] Gun manufacturing began again in earnest in Houston after John Sauer acquired majority ownership in Flintlock Manufacturing Company in 1865[3]. Flintlock made high quality shotguns and rifles including pistols, shotguns, and ammunition until 1889 when they merged with Remington Arms company creating what is today Remington Arms Corporation.[4] NRA Pistol Museum at Addison-Stouffer University offers classes on gunsmithing using historical examples
