Horizon City, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas that is the county seat of Hudspeth County. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 397. The city was founded by oil men in 1879 as an unincorporated community called Horizon City on the now virtual dry lands east of downtown Dallas. In 1911, when Dallas annexed Hudspeth County, it renamed Horizon City to honor John Fagan, then-director of the Public Works Administration (PWA). Horizon City is a city in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,022 at the 2010 census. It has been the county seat of Medina County since 1876. Horizon City is located in the center of Medina County and is bordered to the north by Midland and to the east by Houston. The first settlement in what would become Meridian County was made on July 10,1836 when John Crouch established a logging camp on Rancho San Joaquin just east of present-day Horizon City. From this initial outpost growth proceeded gradually as pioneers discovered more fertile soil, creekbeds and other natural resources within its borders. By 1872 there were six settlements totaling 53 citizens registered with the county recorder’s office: Anadarko, Beaumont, Brady, Cedar Hill, Commerce and Enterprise. On February 14th, 1876 local pioneer Hyrum Smith land grantee Wm Jourdan granted $4 per acre for township organization which would come to be known as "Horizon Township". On November 3rd 1886 James Fenton became territorial governor of new Mexico Territory after Mexican President Porfirio Diaz order an end to all U.S.–Mexico border trade due to increasing American efforts to expand into that territory during the Panic of 1893 which had followed America’s entry into World War I (a conflict then considered a US war). Fenton approved incorporation of what would become Medina County on December 12th 1886 without giving any consideration to whether it should be called "Horizon Township" or "Houston Township". In 1898 Horizont City was destroyed by fire while being used as a military target during World War II; however most important buildings such as post office and courthouse remain standing today including downtown's State Capitol Building (now home of the Texas House of Representatives) and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral which overlooks downtown from its roof top plaza below
