Horizon City is a city in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Medina County and part of the Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area. The site for Horizon City was chosen as the location for a new town by a group of men from Medina County in 1887. They were looking for a place where they could get away from agriculture and live in an improved environment. The town was built on what is now the southern edge of downtown Fort Worth. On November 3, 1888, the first post office was established in Horizon City with Wm Swayne as its first clerk. By 1912, there were eighteen businesses in downtown Horizon City and it had a population of over 100 people. In 1924, Fort Worth annexed Medina County and made Horizon City its second city Limits within that county. In 1935, war broke out between Mexico and America and most businesses closed during World War II; however, some reopened after hostilities ended. From 1945 to 1948, Horizon City grew rapidly due to housing shortages caused by World War II military buildups along Interstate 10 near present-day Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. The population reached 1,500 before settling down again during the postwar years as many people moved back into their homes or returned to farming after leaving wartimeemployment opportunities open upA major development came about when ATCO bought Dayton’s department store chain which opened two blocks east of downtown on Elm Street in 1946 resulting in explosive growth for both retail outletsandresidential buildingsin Downtown Fort Worth which continued until about 1980 when ATCO closed its doors following bankruptcy Downtown Fort Worth experienced another big growth spurt starting around 1980 until about 2000 when ATCO closed its doors following bankruptcy although various businesses continue to operate today including several hotel chains such as Marriott domestic brand properties across three blocks fromthe old theater on Elm Street .
