Foley leased land along State Highway 36 for farming purposes in 1882; this property became known as "Foley's Farm". In 1886, James Witherspoon bought Foley's Farm from him and developed it into a small city which he called Witherspoonville after himself and his wife (the widow of John Couch). Witherspoonville grew rapidly due to its location close to railroad tracks, schools, stores, churches and other businesses. By 1890, there were over 50 homes in Witherspoonville; by 1910 there were over 200 homes inWitherspoonville . By 1920 only 10% ofWitherspoonville was rural; 80%ofWitherspoonville consisted of farms or ranches . In 1922 Bishop Jens Nielsen organized a church congregation within Witherspoonvill e which functioned as its own parish until 1932 when it united with another parish in Amarillo to form one large church congregation known as First Baptist Church Of Amarillo . In 1951 First Baptist Church Of Amarillo merged with United Methodist Church To form Horizon United Methodist Churches Incorporated (HUMC) ; HUMC remains the largest mainline Protestant denomination in Horizon City today
