Horizon City, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It lies along Interstate 10 just east of Austin and north of Lubbock. Horizon City is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. In 1881, prospectors discovered oil shale in what would become Horizon City. In 1912, the Hudspeth Company established a refinery here to produce gasoline for other towns in the area. In 1969 it became an independent city with its own government and mayor. The city was named after Admiral George Hervis Richardson who fought in World War II and later served as administrator for NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt MD The first store opened in 1907 on Main Street and operated until 1941 when it closed due to fire caused by a spark from a welding torch used by local farmers to build their irrigation systems. A post office opened here on November 15, 1907 (the date given on the cornerstone). The first mayor was John Withers In 1971, the city annexed neighbouring unincorporated communities of Langhorne and Walnut Creek which had been municipalities within Hudspeth County since 1911 but no longer had local governments because they were now included within Highway 10 radar scan boundaries

Horizon City was founded in 1879 by C. W. King and his brothers-in-law, J.D. Watkins and A.T. Beasley as a farming community on the edge of what is today known as Hill Country National Park.[1] The town grew quickly because of its location near commercial routes and its easy access to railroads and other transportation options that made it an important center for commerce in eastern Collin County during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1906, the town built its first school, which served as the starting point for many local schools until new facilities were built in Hillsboro and Richardson in the 1940s and 50s respectively. The city's nickname "City of Horizons" comes from its location along one of twoín Mexican Railway lines that crossed through rural west Collin County; these railways connected Mexico City with El Paso, Texas (then part of Mexican America) via Ciudad Juárez on the Chihuahua side and Tucson on Arizona side
Horizon City was founded in 1881 by H.W. McGee and J.D. Garland as a cattle ranch on the banks of the Trinity River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1907 it had reached its current size. In 1935, Horizon City became the first city in Texas to be granted official recognition as a municipality. The city has since seen significant expansion, with the addition of several new neighborhoods and businesses over the years.
