On December 4, 1928 it changed its name to "Horizon City." In 1974 it became "Dallas-Fort Worth" when both cities were consolidated into one government unit under the jurisdiction of The Dallas Regional Planning Agency

However, rapid growth also caused problems such as traffic congestion and pollution from industry in nearby Houston; Horizon City did not have enough money to cope with these issues and went into decline following World War II until it revival in the late 1990s led to its current size.[2] The history of Horizon City begins with Lubbock businessman David Neely who purchased 640 acres (248 ha) east of Houston for $5,000 in 1879 after purchasing land from George Matson for $10 per acre[3]. The first post office opened in 1880, shortly after Neely's purchase,[4]:1 Soon after moving his headquarters from Dallas to what is now downtown Horizon City, he organized a rodeo competition which became one of many early manifestations of Americana culture that would characterize the town during its early years[5]:7 In 1886 when construction began on the Brazos River Bridge across the river,[6]:10Neely donated land along Railroad Avenue which served as their central business district; this area still functioning as today's Main Street[7]:9 By 1889, Industry Park had been developed consisting of four miles (6 km) long abandoned agricultural land between I-35/I-10 and Railroad Avenue located near present day Century Boulevard[8]:15 This area became known as "The Meadows" because it offered views southward towards downtownHouston while also providing access to open space for businesses including roller skating rinks and golf courses[9][10][11], creating an environment that helped spur development within HorizonCity boundaries.[12]

The area that is now Houston was part of the Tejas Indian tribe and their land was given to them in grants from Spain. The first European to visit Houston was Juan de Galvez who landed there on July 6, 1536. In 1763, General Sam Houston fought a battle against Spanish forces at San Jacinto River and won the battle. On December 7, 1793, Texas became an independent republic under Mexican rule. On August 30, 1836, Texas gained its independence from Mexico and became a state within the United States of America.
