However, by the early 1900s, Horizon City had largely disappeared due to factors such as the nearby city of Amarillo taking over much of its trade and industry, as well as increased competition from Amarillo's larger population. In 1925, Horizon City was finally incorporated as a municipal borough in Amarillo County and experienced a resurgence in activity over the next few decades. However, by the 1970s, it had all but disappeared again due to environmental problems caused by oil production within its borders. Today, there is very little evidence remaining of Horizon City apart from some educational institutions that still operate in the area
