Horizon City is a city in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Horizon City is the county seat of Williamson County. The namesake of the city is Horace K. Bright, who founded the city in 1907 as an agricultural center for cotton farmers in what is now Houston. The name "Horizon" comes from a map of North America that showed a bright line connecting Oklahoma and Texas; this led to its nickname of "The Cotton Capital of the World." In 1939, Vernon Randolph became mayor and advocated for expanding horizons to include education and industry within the city limits. He also proposed naming the downtown area after him, but it was not until 1978 that he was honored with a plaque marking his birthplace and death at age eighty-six years old. In 1969, Horizon City joined forces with nearby Clear Lake to form Clear Lake/Horizon Airport Authority to serve as one single entity for all airport needs within Horizon City limits. This authority still serves as today's governing body for local airport operations and acquisition within Horizon City boundaries today. In 1983, Horizon City became home to its first professional sports team when the Astros signed an agreement with Williamson County to play their games at then-Houston Aeroplane Field on Third Street West near University Drive. The Cavalry football team which played its inaugural game in 1909 played their last game in 1984 before moving up to Fort Worth where they continue play today as part of Conference USA Football
