The history of target shooting in Horizon City, Texas can be traced back to the early 1800s. One of the first settlers in what is today Horizon City was John Denton, who arrived in 1836. He set up a small business near the present day intersection of Polk and Houston Streets. The business thrived for many years, but eventually went out of business. However, it wasn't until 1881 that John's son-in-law J.D. Payne opened his own gun store on Polk Street. Payne's store became an important factor in the growth of target shooting in Horizon City. From here on out, target shooting would become a popular pastime among residents and businesses alike. In 1898, Payne's store was replaced by George Waddell's store which still stands today on Polk Street. From here on out, it was guns that started to take center stage in Horizon City as the main source for targets and sporting events.
Horizon City is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, located on the horizon of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,895. It covers an area of just over two square miles (4 km²). The name "Horizon City" originated with a postulate by Scottish philosopher David Hume in 1776: If we surveyed all the horizons that lay before us and discovered that they never reached out to embrace us as far as our eyes could see, then we might well say that this world is but a truncated view or perspective from some remote and unapproachable height; that our own position herebelow is but one short stage on which we are passing through life’s progress." The first people who settled in what would become Horizon City were farmers and traders who followed cattle drives across the country during the 18th century. By 1846, there were only a few buildings left in town after it was destroyed by a storm. In 1870, A.G. Spalding began issuing postage stamps for Hudspeth County and decided to establish a post office at Horizon City so customers could leave their messages without having to go far away to get them answered. The post office remained open until 1907 when it was discontinued because of lack of mail volume. In 1960, four families moved into town from Wichita Falls after moving there during the construction of Interstate 10 (I-10). The original businesses in town included those run by Mrs. James Aiken (1911-2006), Mr. & Mrs. Harry Hodge (1920-2002), Mr. & Mrs.(1945-2008), and Mr.-Mrs.(1948-2010). In 1984, White Sands Missile Range opened up in nearby Poteau Creek Ranch which made Horizon City an important military community for many years; however, today most residents commute to Dallas or Houston for work purposes or live close to Rangeman Air Force Base for access to international flights information technology services conducted by Northrop Grumman Corporation . The city has seen subdivision development increase over time as new homeowners want more space and less traffic around them; however recent population growth has been limited due primarily to births within the city limits rather than annexation from other municipalities . In recent years there have been efforts made by several local organizations including Heritage Hudson Water District #2 Neighbors United for Clean Water Preservation Action Plan Summit/Community meeting held on behalf of citizens impacted by faulty water supplies near Gulfshore Drilling Rig not August 4th 2017 7pm Community Meeting will take place on September 5th 2017 at 6pm at 1003 N Central Ave Ste 3A
