Grant Boulevard), Horizon City annexed Junction City but never developed much beyond that because of lack of rail transportation or other priorities for local government until 1959 when Interstate 10 moved through El Paso adjacent to Horizon City limits making it easier for people to commute intoEl Paso jobs then out again to their homes within Horizon City limits

Haney named his settlement after Captain George Vancouver's exploration group that landed at San Felipe de Atascosa Bay on November 12, 1775 and explored north to the Gulf of Mexico. The site had been visited by Native Americans since prehistoric times and potential locations for a fort were considered. A post office called "Australia" was established in 1837, but no mail reached it due to cholera pandemic which swept through Austin during that year; service was resumed May 3, 1838 with John Withers as first postmaster. In 1840, Byron White built the first frame house in Horizon City when he bought land from Haney for $200 (); white settlers began moving into Horizon City from nearby Williamson County beginning in earnest around this time. In 1868–69, construction started on what would become one ofAustin's most iconic landmarks: West University Bridge (later renamed Sam Rayburn House), which linked downtown Austin with HorizonCity proper across an open field bisected by State highway 290; today's west side ofWest University Boulevard forms the eastern edge of HorizonCity while east side fronts Interstate 35 South just south ofNWacademic Drive/US 59 intersection
