Horizon City is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Horizon City is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the eastern edge of Williamson County and borders Austin to the south and east, San Marcos to the north, and Hill Country to the west. The first settlers in what is now Horizon City were farmers who arrived in 1836. They named their community after a large skyclad mountain peak in Colorado called "Mount Diablo." By 1870, many people had moved into Horizon City from surrounding rural areas because of its fertile soil and good water supply. A post office was established in 1865, and by 1888 it had received over 100 letters a day! In 1892, oil well drilling began in nearby San Marcos; this led to increased activity in Horizon City which led to more jobs for citizens. By 1907 there were over 50 businesses operating in town! In 1912 oil production ceased due to depletion; however, this did not stop development as new businesses started up such as a hospital and two amusement parks! In 1940 an airfield was built adjacent to town so that planes could land at night foraledock services; this helped increase business during World War II when resources were scarce. During the 1960s-1970s real estate prices rose rapidly due to picturesque property values near Interstate 10 which made it easy for people from outside of town to purchase homes here! The economy has slowed down since 2000 as new medical technology has impoverished many industries throughout America while wages have stagnated or decreased
Horizon City was founded in 1892 by James A. Dowling and his wife, Emma. The town was originally named Dowling Springs but changed to Horizon City after a referendum in 1893. The city's first post office was opened in 1894. In 1914, the city added an annex to serve the growing community of Midtown Houston. In 1945, the United States Atomic Energy Commission built a uranium enrichment plant in Horizon City. This plant produced plutonium for use in atomic bombs and remains one of the largest sources of nuclear pollution in Texas. The city experienced several economic downturns throughout its history, but has bounced back multiple times since then. In recent years, Horizon City has become a center for technology industry with several major companies locating there including Intel and AMD. In 2018, Horizon City became the newest municipality to be incorporated within Harris County, Texas following years of planning and discussion between county officials and residents.
