Horizon City, Texas is a small town in Cameron County, Texas. It was founded in 1867 by George Fenton and became a post office in 1893. The population was 1,988 at the 2010 census. Horizon City is located on the Brazos River and is about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Dallas. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name Horizon City comes from two Spanish words: "HORIZON" meaning "southwest" and "CITY" meaning "town". In 1867, George Fenton donated land to build a town on the banks of the Brazos River near what is now downtown Dallas. The town's first store opened in 1870. In 1893, it became a city with its own leaders and government. In 1907, the United States Postal Service established an international mail service through Horizon City as part of its Great Western Mail venture. This service continued until 1971 when it was merged into United States Post Office District No. 2d in Arlington Heights, Illinois

Horizon City is a city in San Antonio, Texas, United States. The population was 40,903 as of the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Antonio after San Antonio proper. The name "Horizon City" comes from Spanish explorer and conqueror Hernando de Soto's plan to build a road through what is now downtown San Antonio so that he could explore the area further south. In 1839, President 1840 Mexican Republic General ANTONIO Lopez de Santa Anna named the new town "San Miguel". In 1849, US Army Colonel James Fenton founded a post at what is now called Plazaview to protect settlers living near the Presidio of Austin from Comanches and other Indians. On July 8, 1852, Mayor Lorenzo Jarnine renamed the town Horizon City in honor of George Washington Morrison who had been president of Texas in 1846-48 and had served as commissioner for Indian affairs under Governor Pancho Villa. In 1865, when Fort Sam Houston became an American military installation and its employees began commuting to their jobs in Austin (a process known as white settlement), about 1/3 of the people living in Horizon City decided to move there instead because they felt more secure knowing their homes were within easy reach of American soldiers. By 1870 most residents had left for various reasons (the Civil War having ended by then) or because they found better opportunities closer to Austin or Dallas. A few thousand people remained until it was annexed by San Antonio on December 15th 1906 following a referendum vote by citizens of both towns combined over whether to become part of either city or remain separate municipalities under their respective mayors with equal powers. In 1907–08 Johnnie Lingard started construction on what is now Downtown SanAntonio which led to much speculation about where he would locate his business headquarters given that no major metropolitan area offered such a large center for commerce and industry like Dallas or Austin did at that time. Ultimately Lingard choseSAN Antonio due to its location adjacent to Market Square – one mile north of Downtown – its infrastructure including streetcar lines leading into downtown from all directions (including South Main Street), its well-to-do residents who supported development along Commerce Street between Callahan Boulevard and Alamo Heights Avenue (now University Drive), as well as its lack of competition from nearby cities such as Dallas or Houston even though those cities were growing rapidly at the time Horizon City lacked nearly enough amenities comparably available inside its limits only 2 miles wide inside downtown). The first store open in downtown SANAntonio was The Armoury Store located on Commerce Street between Alamo Heights Avenue and University Drive just east of Terrell Road outside today's UTSA Campus boundaries; this store would be followed soon thereafter by The Globe & Mail Store also located on Commerce Street between Alamo Heights Avenue and University Drive opposite today's UTSA Campus boundaries; these stores are still extant today along with additional businesses districting off them around Market Square which formed early 20th century precursor to today's downtown district known formally as "The Business District". However despite having similar architecture - both stores seated up against high walls made out OF METAL - they failed commercially while rivaling contemporary Texaco gas stations across IH 10 freeway northwest corner near present day Midway Mall plaza although providing more convenient access than older stores situated primarily along Willowbrook Boulevard across Sabine River valley interior southeast side Of main campus currently used mostly for residential purposes: these days Midway Mall plaza serves mainly retail uses with less commercial potential although some small office buildings have since been erected there)due almost entirely (~90%)to HorizontCityMovieMall developer Jim Ennis son Jerry Ennis securing exclusive movie rights backdated back 4 years lockstep w/ original exhibitors Regal Cinemas predecessor PREMIER CINEMA Enterprises effective January 1 st 2009 Today many restaurants lining Broadway go beyond just dining out here also extensive shopping options abound!
Horizon City was founded in 1879 by John H. Knight, a cattle rancher and banker. It became a railroad town and then an agricultural center before becoming a major city in the early twentieth century. The area now known as Horizon City was first settled by Anglo-Saxon farmers in the late eighteenth century, and its name means "the place where the sun sets." In 1879, Knight founded the city to promote ranching activity. By 1900, Horizon City had become one of the largest cities in Texas. It experienced steady growth until World War II when it lost much of its commercial infrastructure and population. After the war, Horizon City slowly regained some of its former economic vitality but has been declining since the 1990s.
