The first settlers in what is now Horizon City were Jesse Owens and his family who arrived in 1881. A post office was established there on October 1, 1884. In 1907, the name change to Horizon City when it became an incorporated town under the laws of Texas. In 1959, Horizon City became an annexe of Dallas suburb McKinney; however, its citizens continued to vote separately for their own governance until 1965 when they merged into one municipality. Horizon City's economy relies heavily upon agriculture and ranching which has been its mainstay since its inception as a small community. As more people moved into the area in recent decades, new businesses have opened up such as retail stores and restaurants as well as professional services such as law enforcement and accounting firms. The city also boasts several mural projects completed by local artists that depict various aspects of life in the community including history (such as murals honoring cowboy pioneers), current events (such as murals depicting protests against oil drilling), and local landmarks (such as a mural honoring John Lennon).

Horizon City is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Brazos River. The population was 9,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Horizon City was James Waddell in 1836, and he named it after his home town of Halifax, Nova Scotia which he had visited while on business passage through the area. The city's incorporation as a municipality occurred on December 16, 1881. A post office called Horizon City was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1907, oilwells were discovered offshore and began to be developed; this led to an increase in industry and commerce within Horizon City limits. In 1916, John Hildebrandt opened the first grocery store west of Dallas when Dallas annexing Hudspeth County; this Store became one of the most important businesses within Horizon City boundaries for many years until it closed its doors in 1978 due to declining sales rates following deregulation of retail stores throughout Texas by then-Governor Perry et al.. Families moved into Horizon City from surrounding rural areas during this time as oil production boomed nearby but there remained little development outside of downtown until about 1970 when Interstate 10 bypassed much of downtown making it easier for non-downtown residents to get around without having to venture out into traffic messes that used to occur every day during peak hours just before rush hour . Development has been centered around Trinity Road (later IH10) eastward with new buildings built along University Drive (later Loop 410), especially since 2000 when Growth Partners started redeveloping what had once been a small shopping center near US Highway 287 known locally as "The Gap" - their goal being mostly mixed use housing with ground floor commercial uses parking off IH10 so that people coming and going can avoid heavy traffic !!
