When the town of Hidalgo in Texas first developed, it was a sparsely populated area. The only way to get around was by horse and buggy or on foot. There were no roads or railways until the mid-19th century, so transportation was an important factor in early development. One of the first mention of Hidalgo is from 1836 when Captain John Folsom wrote about his journey through the area. In 1850, when Postmaster General James Buchanan issued a proclamation calling for exploration and settlement in the new Territory of Texas, Hidalgo received a letter from a man named Elisha Cooke asking for settlers to move into his land. Three years later, on July 9, 1852, two men named Wm. Ayer and John Robertson started out from their farmstead on what is now US Highway 97 near present-day El Paso to establish Hidalgo as a town. At that time there were no schools within easy reach so farming was the mainstay of local economy and trade; however, some people did start businesses such as grist mills and sawmills nearby which led to growth during those early days. The first post office was established in Hidalgo on October 5, 1854 using letters written by George Washington Garland (1827-1898). The name change occurred due to objections from neighboring towns who felt they had been given an unfair advantage over Hidalago because they had more people! For many years mail would be delivered hours before it arrived at its destination ensuring that everyone could participate in community life despite distances difference! Today there are several old buildings still standing throughout town that are reminders of how much progress has been made since then! During World War II many residents enlisted in military service including Air Force Major Leroy Sargent who served with distinction earning three stars while helping maintain communication between airfields across North America; he also built one of the few air raid shelters west of Mexico City during that time period! A unique aspect about our history is the fact that almost all current residents Cameo descent making us one of only two remaining towns with this affiliation; other communities have either switched away or amalgamated with other settlements since coming under American control following WWII!

The city has since experienced many growth phases including becoming one of the most culturally diverse cities in Texas with multiple languages spoken within its limits as well as hosting several major professional sports teams including FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo!

Hidalgo, Texas is a small town located in East Texas. The population of Hidalgo was 5,402 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Hidalgo County was Marcos de Niza on his historic trip from Mexico City in 1541. Spanish traders and travelers frequented the region for its fertile land and mineral resources that included lead and silver. In 1836, Antonio López y Gómez founded the first school in what is now Hidalgo County when he landed with his party of seven on an expedition across Central America searching for a new route to California. The town of San Miguel de Allende, east of today's town of Hidalgo, was founded by Mexican colonists who named it after their patron saint, San Miguel de Aguayo. In 1846, during the Mexican–American War (1846-48), General Antonio Lopez Yusticecracia led an army against American forces under General Zachary Taylor at Palo Alto Hill outside New Orleans. On July 12th, 1846 Yusticecracia's army surprised and destroyed Taylor's force at Palo Alto Hill;[1] this victory helped reestablish Mexican control over much of Central Texas north of Rio Grande River.[2] After the war ended in December 1848, General José Joaquín Arista organized all Santa Clara County into one district called Alvarado District which included present day Hidalgo County as well as parts of Cameron Parish to the south and east; however no vote took place to make this territory a part of Alvarado District because there were no Mexicans living there then[3]. On January 1st 1860,[4] Pájaro Rancho became available for purchase by Colonel John Troup (1813-76) who had fought with Andrew Jackson in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor general under Polk during Reconstruction following our Civil War. The name is derived from the Spanish word "Hidre" meaning “hill” and "liga" meaning “ boundary.” It was named after General Antonio López de Santa Anna, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in 1851.
