Hidalgo is a city in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,614 at the 2010 census. The name derives from Hernando de Soto's exploration of the region that includes present-day Webb County in 1541. The first known people to live in what is now Webb County were the Comanches. In 1836, Colonel James Bowie and his band of Texans engaged in a siege of San Antonio by force of arms against the Comanche Chief Quanah Parker. During this engagement, Bowie killed three Comanche chiefs with his rifle but did not kill their leader because he recognized him as an ally of the Mexican government. In 1839, Manuel Armijo founded Pecos City on the banks of Buffalo Bayou north of San Antonio and named it for General Sam Houston who had been commander-in-chief during the Texan Revolution against Mexico. Hidalgo City was established by Andrew White on July 20, 1847 as part of White's ill-fated attempt to create a new county in Alamo Parish outside Austin (the current Travis County) under military jurisdiction so that soldiers stationed there could be relieved without interacting with civilians. Hidalgo City began to grow rapidly due to its location and infrastructure; within five years it had over 10 buildings and 100 residents. On November 3, 1850 Pecos citizens ratified an ordinance creating a provisional government for Texas based on model legislation drawn up by Lieutenant Governor George Fenton Browne and Mayor Averill Harlan Richardson Jr.. On December 1st $5,- worthof goods were offered for passage through Pecos Harbour into Galveston Island which was then open to shipping only after inspection by Commodore John Doolittle who led American forces invading Mexico in 1915. On January 9th 1850 Captain James Cook anchored off shore near present day Reynosa with supplies for General Santa Anna including cannons captured from Mexican forces at Veracruz four days earlier during Brown's Expeditionary Force campaign against Mexico which ended September 24th when American troops reached Zacatecas Creek October 2nd where they camped until December 8th when they marched southward towards Tampico Bay where they landedJanuary 11th under cover of darkness pursuant to orders from General Santa Anna march inland towards Zacatecas River February 6th arriving at Monterrey March 17th 1800 having lost almost half their number since leaving Zacatecas creek less than two weeks before! At this point most Texans probably thoughtGeneral Santa Anna had won WW2!!! Unfortunately like many things good about those days gone bad... Santa Anna disbanded his armyMarch 26 1800 reassembled some more men left behindat Monterrey went back into action April 12 1800 finally capturing Zapata October 25 1800 after months long pursuit! This event marks one hundred years since Pecos became an incorporated city!

Hidalgo, Texas is a small town located in Medina County, Texas, about 7 miles west of San Antonio. The population was 3,827 at the 2000 census. It lies on the east side of the Rio Grande River and is bordered by Medina to the south and east, La Joya County to the north, and Bexar County to the west. The area that now Hidalgo was first settled by European Americans in 1836 as part of what was then called Nueces County. The name Hidalgo comes from General José de la Vega y Hidalgo's successful campaign against Mexican forces during the Texan-Mexican War (1846-48). In 1849, land grants were given in this area to José María Urrutia and Francisco Severo Galveston. By 1860 almost all of Medina County had been organized into Aritna County with its seat at San Fernando. In 1876 Santiago García set up post office here under license from US Postmaster General James K. Polk after explorations led him to believe that an important crossroad connecting Texas with Mexico would be found hereabouts. Spanish settlers arrived later in large numbers as a result of American ranching operations which began in earnest following completion of First World War land acquisitions on both sides of the border. With its rich cattle industry, Hidalgo developed rapidly into one of TX's most important towns during its early years as a republic; it also became home to two Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library buildings -- one opened in 1913 and dedicated to Union general Ulysses S Grant who had served nearby Fort Sam Houston while also serving as governor ofTX; another building opened in 1929 at Montrose College adjacentto UTSA campus where Grant once taught law before dying suddenly days after inauguration; note: these buildings are still used today for various educational purposes including research by historians
