Hidalgo is a town in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first white settlers in Hidalgo arrived in 1827 and named it after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who had helped liberate Mexico from Spanish rule. Hidalgo was founded on a rancho granted to Francisco Moreno by Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla on November 2, 1828. Hidalgo became a municipality on December 12, 1846 following the Mexican Statehood Act. Borders of Texas were not finalized until 1848 when US President James K. Polk signed the Guadalupe Treaty which ceded Mexico all of New Mexico east of the Rio Grande to America includingado and parts of present-day Starr County including much of what is now Hidalgo County. As part of this treaty, Spain also ceded land grants totaling 3 million acres (1 hectare) in present-day Starr and Travis Counties to American citizens as well as 5 million acres (2 hectares) to Native Americans through various treaties dating back to 1785/86 known as The Pueblo Grant Association Agreement etc., effectively splitting up what is now north central Texas into several Indian reservations with few if any residents remaining on them today due principally to government policy and assimilation policies during and after World War II. The town was founded by John Smeaton in 1851 on a rancho grant he received from Colonel Manuel Micheltorena near San Miguel City south of Austin while he was serving as military governor for Apache territory under General Antonio López de Santa Anna; Smeaton renamed his community "Hidalgo" after General Lopez de Santa Anna's capital city Monterrey (now Mexico City). The town of Hidalgo, Texas was founded in 1835 on the banks of the Rio Grande. The town was named for General Antonio de Hidalgo y Costilla, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The post office at Hidalgo was established in 1836 and remained in operation until it closed in 1906. The first school in the town was built in 1840 and continued to be operated by local citizens until it were discontinued around 1912. Hidalgo experienced significant growth during the late 19th century as a result of its strategic location on the border between Mexico and Texas. In 1892, a railroad station was built nearby and served as an important connection for farmers travelling between Texas and Mexico. A community hall also became active during this time and helped promote cultural events within Hidalgo. In 1901, a new courthouse replaced the original building which had been constructed previous year across from what is now known as Park Elementary School. This courthouse served as the primary court facility for all of Hidalgo until it closed around 1966 due to budget limitations. Later that same year, another courthouse located further south became operational after being renovated with funding provided by then-Governor Ross Perot’s administration. Throughout most of its history, Hidalgo has been typified by its agricultural production which has resulted in much wealth being generated for its residents over time. Today, many businesses operate within the town limits including restaurants, grocery stores, mechanics shops and even a few Saks Fifth Avenue locations!
