He was met by U.S. forces under General Zachariah Taylor at the battle of San Jacinto in1868. After a bloody three-day battle, Santa Anna's army was routed andTaylor took control of Texas. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo established the Republic of Texas on February 2, 1867, while Santa Anna continued to rule as an autocrat in Mexico. In 1870, after Ulysses S. Grant became president of the United States and ordered Mexican troops withdrawn from Texas, Santa Anna made peace with Taylor and signed the Aguinaldo treaty ceding all but a tiny slice of present-day Hidalgo County to America.
