However, by 1915, Hidalgo had only 10 residents remaining and declined to incorporation into Webb County. In 1928, Hidalgo was acquired by the Texas State Railroad Company which continued to operate it until it was discontinued in 1970. Today, there is still some evidence of development from earlier times including an old train station that has been converted into a museum and two banks that remain standing from when Hidalgo saw significant growth in tourism during the late 20th century.
In 1836, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who had been captured at the Battle of San Jacinto, was brought to Texas and tried for treason. He was found guilty and sentenced to death. However, he was pardoned by Governor James K. Polk and fled to Mexico City before his execution could happen.
