Hidalgo is a town in Llano County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso–Carrollton, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Hidalgo County was Father Antonio de la Garza on December 8, 1795 while travelling through the area on his way to San Antonio. He named it after Don José de Hidalgo y Costilla who had fought for Spain in the War of Independence and helped lead an army against Mexico under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The name may have been derived from "hidalgos" or "hijos del hidalgo", meaning descendants of Juan Hidalgo (or sometimes simply "Juan") who fought for Spain in that war. Hidalgo County was organized on March 3, 1836 when parts of Llano and Presidio Counties were annexed by the new Republic of Texas. When the Republic dissolved on November 6, 1845, most of Texas became Mexican Territory and Hidalgo County remained within Mexican territory until January 29, 1846 when it reverted back to U.S. control as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalga which ended the Mexican-American War and returned all land east of Mexico City to Mexico including much present-day Hidalgo County. The town dates back to 1880 when Cisco First Baptist Church was built near where Interstate 10 crosses county line into Mexico about two miles east from today's border crossing with Webb County (the original site). A post office called Cisco was established in 1881 with Wm Fenton as its firstpostmaster; it closed in 1907 due to mail service being provided by carrier stagecoaches rather than by mail trucks like nowdays In 1936 Cisco reopened as an aviation museum with an airfield and landing strip across from church which served as a base for many small planes during World War II including P-51 Mustangs used by Army Air Forces pilots flying over Iwo Jima and Okinawa . In 1951 there were plans to construct a toll road thru town but these were never completed

The first European to visit Hidalgo was Juan de la Cosa on July 5, 1519. In 1836, Hidalgo became a part of the Mexican Republic and was named for General José de Hidalgo y Costilla who fought in the Mexican-American War. Spanish explorer Gabriel García Márquez passed through the area in 1848 while exploring southern Texas for his naturalist series "A Hundred Years of Solitude". In 1853, when Mexico achieved its independence from Spain, many Texans decided that they wanted their own country and formed the Republic of Texas. On March 16 of that year, John Fayette Carrillo laid claim to what are now Comanche County and portions of Tarrant County as part of this new republic. This action violated Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo which had been negotiated between Mexico City and Russia just prior to Mexicans achieving their independence. As a result, Mexico took full control over these areas including Hidalgo until it ceded them back to Texas on December 10th 1865 under Agreement Between The United States And Mexico No 1 after much legal wrangling by both countries' governments This event has long been overshadowed by events leading up to it such as Lopez Bonilla's attempt on January 20th 1870 which resulted in more than 50 killed with over 200 wounded inside Fort Sam Houston; or President Porfirio Diaz's decision to grant citizenship to all Mexicans living in DFW regardless of residency status on April 14th 1913 following months of protests against this policy known as "Diazvieto" or "The NewMexico Incident". Hidalgo itself only reached its current population size after World War II when many settlers moved into the area because there were no other places available for them due to governmental restrictions placed upon Homesteading during the war years such as an inability for farmers to build telephone poles or railroads east of US 36 without prior permission from state authorities Today's community began developing around churches established since before Spanish settlement started hereabouts (circa 1800), schools (1850s), cotton gin/mule driver stop/railroad depot/theater complex built by local ranchers (1920s) and then more recent additions like post office (1930s).
