Manuel González de la Garza built a small rancho called San José on the east side of present day Hidalgo about 1824. That same year, he married María Isabel García who was also from Coahuila. One son from their union—José Francisco González de la Garza—founded Santiago del Rio settlement on Hudspeth Creek about 1830 while another son—Agustin Castro—founded Austin about 1835 or 1840. In 1859–60, José Francisco Gonzalezde laGarza sold part ownership in Santiago del Rio to Captain James Bowie for $2,500 cash! It appears that Bowie may have been searching for an early Anglo settler related to his father+ancestors since he purchased over 100 acre parcel adjacent to San José just west of Houston Heights which would become home to Bowie’s first Anglo settler community known as “Humble Beginnings” later renamed “Houston Heights”!
