The Hewitt Gun Case Company was founded in 1918 by H.W. Hewitt and his brother-in-law, J.C. Gilmore. The company produced both pistol cases and rifle Cases for the hunting, shooting and protection of personal firearms. Hewitt Gun Cases became well known throughout the Southwest for their high quality products and customer service. In 1959, the company merged with Winchester Firearms Corporation to form Winchester/Hewitt Corporation. Under this merger, the Hewitt name was dropped from all product lines while Winchester continued to produce pistols under its own name as well as rifles under that of Winchester/Hewitt Rifle & Shotguns. As a result of these changes, there are now several different brands associated with each type of firearm being produced by Winchester/Hewitt Corporation: Winchesters, Model 1892s ( Ruger), Model 1886s ( Remington), Sharpshooters ( Browning) and even shotguns such as pump guns!

The Hewitt, Texas softgun case history begins in the early 1930s with a collection of pistols given to the city by John W. Hewitt. The pistols were stored in an old storage building on what is now Third Street. In the late 1940s, another pistol collection was donated by Mr. Hewitt's grandson, Dick Hewitt. This collection included handguns from throughout the years and included some that had not been seen in years. These guns were stored in a new building on Fourth Street which was later used as the City Hall Annex. In 1969, when Dick Hewitt sold his business to Vernon Rutledge, he also donated all of his Pistol Collection to the City of Hewitt for use as public records and museum specimens. In 1984, when Vernon Rutledge died, his son-in-law and heir Larry Hirsch offered to donate all of his father's firearms collections to the City of Hewitt if we would be able to find a permanent home for them within our walls (the former City Hall Annex). After much searching we found a home for these collections at Peel Regional Library where they are currently kept as part of the Municipal Archives Department Special Collections Section. Today, this family tradition continues withLarry Hirsch's wife Lynn serving as President Emeritus and Christine Liefahl taking over as Vice President emeritus for this important sector of our municipal government!
