Hewitt is a small town located in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 524 at the 2010 census. Hewitt was founded by Captain John A. Hewitt in 1887 and became a town on the Sabine River. The current community of Hewitt was laid out in 1903 by Captain John A. Hewitt and his wife, Nellie C. Whitehead Hewitt, after they relocated from Wichita Falls, Texas. Hwy 45 links Hewitt to nearby Lubbock and Midland through the town's center which also houses the library and several businesses such as a post office, grocery store, bank, auto garage and service station. The first European to visit what is now Medina County was Spanish explorer Juan de Montoya on October 20, 1519 when he landed on an island near what is now Lubbock and went ashore to explore it. He named it Isla de las Palmas because he thought it resembled an egg that stood high like an eagle's beak (later UTEP would place this egg at present-day Midland). Montoya explored most of northern Bexar County before returning home on December 8th with reports of gold deposits in Coahuila Creek near San Antonio but no evidence exists to support his claim other than hearsay or rumor - until recently! In 1847 three men prospecting for property along US Highway 66 called Hudspeth Springs where they discovered two mines worth $1 each while exploring around Wells Branch about 10 miles northeast of present day Lubbock; one claims surface rights but production stopped due to low grades and lack of exploration capital; one claims all surface rights but production continued until 1888 when overproduction caused prices to plummet and led both men into bankruptcy; Hudspeth Springs mine still contains someinite gold today although assay returns only 1/8 ounce per tonne! In 1875 Gentry brothers opened a grist mill at Big Spring on the banks of Buffalo Bayou in what is now Midland which began producing cornmeal for local markets; flour from this mill reached Ft Worth by 1880! Butch Cassidy raided Fort Worth during Christmas season & stole $30 000 from Ulysses S Grant inside Fort Worth Market Place - sofortly followed up with a raid onto Beaumont market days later resulting infifteen lives lost including five rifles (& four horses) seized! By 1865 Griggs had developed cotton gin fever & shut mills down throughout North America leaving behind many abandoned towns including: Buffalo Bayou Mills (in Midland), Lancaster Mill (in Junction), Santa Fe Mission Mill (near Deming), Godfrey Plantation(near Wichita Falls) & Mound City Plantation(northwest corner of Haskell County). By 1870 there were only 8 cotton gins operating nationwide- all closed by 1870!! In 1886 Major James Womack organized militia forces called "The Texan Rangers" under command of General George Armstrong Custer during the Mexican–American War against Mexican rebels led by Pancho Villa who had invaded Texas seeking refuge within Mexico proper following their defeat at Buena Vista Station earlier that year across New Mexico territory including El Paso County westward into Arizona Territory!!! For three months beginning September 30th Lt Col John Eaddy's 3rd Cavalry Regiment served as garrison duty duty at Matamoros Barracks awaiting orders from General Custer leading up to battle against Villa!!! On October 16th Custer ordered Eaddy's regiment thenceforward march eastward via Monterrey Ranch Rd into Mexico Territory concurrent with other units marching southwesterly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Army Levee Company detached from 2nd Brigade Combat Team 1st Infantry Division Headquarters battery marched northwest past Matamoros Barracks towardsuca Valley where they were met by artillery fire!!!!! Ranger unit galloped back around village towards barracks then rejoin main column???? Battle ensued commencing November 3rd & lasting six hours ending with loss of 23 officers killed or missing noncombatant!!!! About 350 Mexicans Killed plus 5 Americans wounded !! This event has been mythologized ever since!! Aftermath: Mexican army regrouped north of Veracruz y destroyed U.S.-Mexican trade routes !!! At least 6 Americans died as result various skirmishes between American troops& Mexican government troops took place throughout Veracruz Province
