Gun targets in Hewitt, Texas have been around since the 1800s. Hewitt is first mentioned in a deed dated March 12, 1818, as part of the Rancho de los Tejanos. The ranch was divided between Juan Bautista de Anza and his wife, María Antonia Pico y Alvarado. Alvarado sold some of the land to Pedro Menéndez de Avila and Antonio López for $600. In 1824, José Negrete chartered a trading post at present- day Hewitt with Manuel Armijo as its founder. At this time, Hewitt was known as "The Fort" because it was located on an important route between San Antonio and Austin. In 1839, Samuel Houston bought the fort from Armijo and renamed it La Hacienda Houston. Houston spent many years expanding La Hacienda into what is now called The Colony ofHoustonia. In 1845, hostilities between Mexico and Texas began when Mexican General Santa Anna attacked Austin while trying to flee Texan Independence Day celebrations in Mexico City. The Battle of Palo Alto ended Mexican control over Texas and signified the end of Anglo rule in that state. After Texan independence was achieved on November 14th of that year by delegates from all parts of the United States (except California), Texans came north to claim their share in what became known as the Lone Star State. On December 15th, 1850 (the date which has become commonly celebrated asTexans celebrate their statehood), Texans voted to create a militia commission (known today as the Texas Rangers) to protect their rights within our new republic against any possible future Mexican attack or annexation by Mexico! On April 16th 1861 (4 months after Texan secession from US), Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee attacked Union Army troops at Fort Sumter in South Carolina without warning! Hewitt is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,319 at the 2000 census. Hewitt is located on the Brazos River and it is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. It was named after James A. Hewitt, an early settler. The first cabin in what is now Hewitt was built by James A. Hewitt in 1876. The town was founded in 1881 when a group of men from Odessa decided to homestead near the Brazos River. The name "Hewitt" originated from this choice and not from any other place within Johnson County or Austin proper. The original school building in Hewitt was destroyed by a fire in 1902, but a new school building was constructed soon afterward and served as the town's high school until 1956 when it became part of the Austin ISD system. In 1990, Hewitt voters passed an ordinance establishing its own fire department which has been operational ever since.
