Hewitt is named after General James A. Hewitt, who commanded American forces during World War II and later served as United States Ambassador to Spain. WRAC continued designing firearms under the name Winchester until it was sold to Japanese Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Corporation in 1998 for $1 billion USD (). Japan then rebranded it Marui Corporation (). Prior to this event, Marui had made some major contributions to firearm design including developing a gas-operated semi-automatic shotgun called the Model 99 which has been credited with changing infantry warfare forever (). The economy of Hewitt depends on agriculture and light manufacturing. Agriculture includes cattle, pigs, horses, wheat farming, corn farming, cotton farming and soybean production. Light manufacturing includes manufacturers of electronics products such as televisions and computer monitors.

The first settlers in Hewitt were James and Nancy Clements who arrived in 1853 from Kentucky. They raised crops and hogs on their farm until 1861 when they erected a log cabin for themselves and started to build a house. In 1865, they married Anna Kapp and their family moved to what is now Hewitt. The Clements children were: Fannie (1866-1911), James H., Nancy (1868-1954), Alice (1870-1945) and Charles L.(1872-1941). In 1892, John Aiken opened his grocery store in what is now the old town square. He grew coffee beans here and sold them across Tarrant County. Some of these early customers are still remembered today including Judge Royce Youngblood who operated the first bank west of Dallas in 1915 and donated land for Hewitt's first school district which included much of present day Hewitt Village as well as other smaller communities around Fort Worth before it became an urban area in 1972. The post office was established at Hewitt on October 12, 1886 by John Waddell with Jno Murchison as mail carrier. It was renamed Fort Worth on November 15, 1896 after General Tom Connally's victory over Mexican forces at Buena Vista Canyon near San Antonio during the Mexican–American War that year
